UK Anti-Doping (UKAD), the national organisation dedicated to clean sport, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Crime Agency (NCA), setting out clear guidelines for sharing information in the fight against the supply and trafficking of doping-related substances and activities in sport.

UKAD hope that the agreement will enhance its ability to prevent and detect anti-doping rule violations under the World Anti-Doping Code.

The MoU has been developed over a number of months to ensure that any information shared is done so in keeping with relevant legislative requirements. This compliments MoUs already in place with UK Border Force and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

On the signing of the MoU, UKAD Director of Operations Nicole Sapstead said, “Today, we are delighted to formalise our already strong partnership with the NCA, strengthening our ability to tackle the supply chain of doping-related substances and intensify our activities in the global fight against doping in sport."

NCA Deputy Director Roy McComb said: “Good information sharing is at the heart of effective law enforcement. The NCA's partnership with UK Anti-Doping will not only help them target traffickers but will also protect athletes."

Information will be shared with UKAD by the NCA when it relates to the detection, deterrence, enforcement or prevention of an anti-doping rule violation.

UKAD will share information with the NCA when it relates to the prevention, detection, investigation or prosecution of serious organised crime, or the reduction of crime

The announcement comes ahead of the release of next year's revised 2015 World Anti-Doping Code.

The Code, due to be released on 1 January 2015, is the document that harmonises regulations regarding anti-doping in sport across all sports and all countries of the world. The Code provides a framework for anti-doping policies, rules, and regulations for sport organisations and public authorities.

On the relationship between today's announcement and the World Anti-Doping Code, Nicole Sapstead added, “Intelligence and investigations is an integral component of the revised 2015 World Anti-Doping Code and clean athletes should rest assured that UKAD is doing all it can to prevent doping activities and protect sport in the UK.”
