The campaign, created to lobby George Osborne to protect grassroots sport funding, has been seen by over 10 million Twitter users and enabled over 1,200 direct emails to the Treasury asking for funding to be protected ahead of the Spending Review on 25 November.
Polling carried out by the Alliance shows that 79% of people believe the Government should do more to support grassroots sport. A further 75% believe grassroots sport should receive more funding from the Government.
The passionate support and feelings towards the benefits of grassroots sport has seen messages and photos shared to a dedicated campaign site (www.getyourkiton.team) using the hashtag #GetYourKitOn.
National governing bodies of all sizes and many other sports organisations have lent their support to the campaign as well as well known sports men and women.
With time running out before next Wednesday’s Spending Review, the Alliance Chief Executive Emma Boggis is asking all Alliance members and those who are passionate about grassroots sport to #GetYourKitOn and get behind the campaign.
“The response to the campaign has been fantastic and we’re confident that these messages will be getting through to the Chancellor ahead of 25 November. There more support we get, the harder our call is to ignore.
“By visiting www.getyourkiton.team you can send a quick and direct message straight to George Osborne’s inbox as well as send tweets and Facebook messages. There are also infographics and images that can be used and shared.
“As a nation we are all connected to grassroots sport, be it taking our children to local clubs or keeping ourselves active and part of a community in our adult lives. We need the Chancellor to understand how much we value the investment the Government makes in our grassroots.”
Ambassadors from across the sector have come out in support of the campaign including Gail Emms, Chrissie Wellington, Sarah Hunter, Andy Turner and John Hartson.
Former Olympic, World, Commonwealth and European triple-jump champion Jonathan Edwards CBE is also backing the campaign and had this to say about the importance of grassroots sport:
"Like many people my love of sport started when I could walk. Without the support of my family and my school I would never have made it to the top of the podium at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The work and impact of community based clubs, coaches and volunteers should never be underestimated. That is why I am supporting the #GetYourKitOn campaign for grassroots sport and urging the Government to continue to invest in sport and recreation."
