Six sports clubs from across the country were honoured last night at the Sport and Recreation Alliance’s national awards ceremony.  Awarded by the Alliance to sports clubs which have made an outstanding contribution to their community, representatives from the clubs received their trophy from cricketing legend and Strictly Come Dancing star Mark Ramprakash.
The Sport and Recreation Alliance, in association with the Foundation for Sport and the Arts (FSA) and the Youth Sports Trust, is proud to host the ceremony, held in St Paul’s, London, to celebrate the outstanding commitment and dedication of the finalists in making sport accessible to all.
Tim Lamb, chief executive of the Alliance said:
“The Sports Club of the Year Award is something that we have hosted for many years to congratulate and celebrate our community sports clubs.  The nominees and winners just keep getting better and better, and it is inspiring to see, in these straitened economic times, clubs run by volunteers going from strength to strength.  We hear a lot about the Big Society, you need to look no further that these clubs to see the very definition of it.

Mark Ramprakash said:
“As a professional sportsman I know that getting paid to do something you love is easy.  Doing the day job and then giving up evenings and weekends to volunteer at your sports club is truly admirable.  It is thanks to the volunteers that this country has such a love for participating in sports.  Without them, there would be no clubs, and there would be no sporting stars of the future.

The winners are:

Sports Club of the Year - Deer Park Archers
Volunteer Management - Barry YMCA Gymnastics
Open and Inclusive - Newbury Volleyball Club
CASC of the year - New Earswick and District Indoor Bowls Club
School Club Links - Dynamo Gymnastics Club
Professional Sports Club - Watford FC
