The report, released at the Alliance's Annual General Meeting at Kings College London, highlights the difference its made during the year. The report also outlines the future objectives of the Alliance to support the pivotal role of its members to help lead the development of a healthy and active nation.
In the summer of 2015, the Alliance facilitated meetings with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and its members to deliver a sector-wide response to help inform the Government’s new sport strategy. Sporting Future, published in December 2015, established a new framework for the sector for the next five years.
Tracey Crouch, Minister for Sport said: "The Sport and Recreation Alliance has played a major role at the heart of community sport for more than eight decades.
“It gives a voice to the sport sector and? I hope it will continue to go from strength to strength. I look forward to working with the Alliance in the future ?to help? get even more people involved in sport and physical activity.”
The Alliance has a history of producing reports and research that inform policy debate. In the Government’s Sporting Future strategy, the Alliance’s report Reconomics, published in 2014, is referenced as clearly evidencing the significant contribution to the economy by those taking part in outdoor activity. As a result, the Government has committed to maximise this value through the work it undertakes.
The Alliance works with its members to champion good governance and set examples of best practice. In November 2014 the Alliance released the refreshed version of the Voluntary Code of Good Governance to give the sport and recreation sector an outline of the principles required to make sure governance is at the heart of each organisation. The Government’s decision to agree a new UK Sports Governance Code is a reassuring development in making sure that the highest possible standards are applied throughout the sector and the Alliance anticipates that there will be synergies with the Voluntary and new Government Governance Code.
Emma Boggis, Chief Executive of the Sport and Recreation Alliance said: “We are very proud of the work we have achieved over the past year. It has been a transitional time for the sector and our members and it is welcoming to know that the thoughts identified by ourselves and our members have been listened to. We hope Keeping fit for the future will demonstrate to our members and the wider sector our commitment to lead, champion and enable them to seize the opportunities ahead. Now more than ever it is important that we work together to build on the great work that takes place every day.”
