Second Alliance Director's Club reception a sell-out

Second Alliance Director's Club reception a sell-out news article image

This week the Sport and Recreation Alliance hosted its second sold-out Alliance Directors Club reception at One Alfred Place in London.

The Alliance Directors Club is a new hub for aspiring and existing directors in sport to hone their skills, build their networks and progress in their career.

The Club allows members to explore what it means to be a director in sport and recreation and also a place where ideas can be shared and new partnerships formed.

Fifty directors from across sectors were brought together at the reception to hear a keynote speech delivered by Ameesh Manek, Non-Executive Director at England Basketball and former Director of Global Deals at Barclays Bank.

In his speech Ameesh laid out how a governing body can grow commercial income by:

  • taking a long-term strategic view
  • recognising that board members are running a business and not just a sport.
  • offering services to represent the mass market of their sport and not just their traditional “heartland”
  • being humble and open-minded in their self-analysis – if you don’t have the right skills on the board then go and get them
  • investing in the organisation's people and resources
  • driving structural change in the sport that make it easier to do business with.

The next directors club is scheduled for the autumn. To make sure you get invited to all future events sign-up to the Alliance Directors Club.
