Sir Bobby Charlton, in his role as president of the Torch Trophy Trust, was interviewed by the new Minister of State for the Foreign Office, the Rt Hon Hugo Swire MP, yesterday on the steps of Durbar Court in the grand surroundings of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office buildings.
The Trust loaned one of the two original 1948 London Olympic torches to the Foreign Office to be used as part of the “GREAT” campaign which has utilised the platform of the Games to showcase Britain’s capabilities, promote and enhance its reputation abroad and help maximise the economic potential of the Games.
Sir Bobby, accompanied by Lady Norma Charlton, answered a series of questions from the Minister – in his first day in the job – about the Trust and the vital work it does supporting grassroots sport, his life in football and his heroes – in front of a crowd of selected Foreign Office staff who had contributed to the Olympics. Sir Bobby also spoke about his pride at the Olympics and about how the Games had brought Britain together.
