Direct Line insurance has curtailed its coverage for motorists with long trailers, meaning that participants towing gliders or other long equipment, like boats may no longer be insured.
British Gliding Chief Executive Pete Stratten has higlighted that Direct Line policies now exclude vehicles towing trailers which exceed 7 metres despite the fact that the practice is perfectly legal under British law.
Both the Road Traffic Act and the DVLA offer guidance on permitted towing and Direct Line's policy cuts across those regulations.
James Allen, head of policy at the Sport and Recreation Alliance says that governing bodies and clubs need to ensure that their activities are safely covered.
He said, "We believe that Direct Line car policies should cover legal British motoring practices as a matter of course. To begin making exclusions like this is confusing for consumers and potentially the thin end of the wedge as far as sports participants are concerned.
"Nevertheless, clubs and NGBs need to remain mindful that their policies provide them and their participants with adequate coverage."
