New gambling licence proposals welcomed by sport news article image

CCPR, the alliance of governing bodies of sport and recreation, today welcomed proposals published by sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe to introduce new licence requirements for overseas-based online gambling firms who have a customer base in Britain.

The licence will also require operators to share details of any suspicious betting patterns with UK national governing bodies.

Tim Lamb, commenting on the consultation launched today, said:

"Governing bodies of sport will welcome these proposals which will add another layer of security to sports betting. The protection of the integrity of sport needs to be paramount and licensing all bookmakers to operate in the UK is a step towards the level of protection which sport deserves.

"The proposals represent a step forward and establish the principle that all betting companies operating in the UK need to abide by the highest standards, not just those companies which are based here."
