Helen Grant, the MP for Maidstone and the Weald, has been appointed the new Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Sport and Equalities.
The new Minister, who is a qualified lawyer and has been an MP since the 2010 general election, has a long background in sport – being a recreational tennis player and a former county hockey and regional age-group judo champion.
Helen Grant replaces the outgoing Hugh Robertson who becomes Minister of State at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, after three years working at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport on behalf of the sector.
Robertson, who was initially appointed at the same level as the new incumbent (Parliamentary Under Secretary) was elevated to Minister of State in 2012.
Tim Lamb, Chief Executive of the Sport and Recreation Alliance said:
“The Sport and Recreation Alliance would like to wish Helen warm congratulations on her appointment as the new Minister for Sport.
“As a former county athlete and current community club member we are sure that Helen will have a firm grip on many of the issues that affect grassroots clubs.
“As the umbrella body for sport and recreation organisations we look forward to working with her closely as she embarks on her new role.”
