About
The club has grown from five members to well over 150 active runners in just two years, with up to 40 attendees weekly. The running club works closely with their local community and Sam offers free running activities for local schools. This gives the teachers a great opportunity to mix up PE lessons and is great for the children to try new activities. Sam arranges activities that focus on fun, balance, agility and coordination.
All of their leaders and coaches are qualified under England Athletics guidelines with additional training completed in areas including first aid and safeguarding.
The club aims to support:
· Physical conditioning;
· Technical and tactical drills;
· Lifestyle support;
· Athlete development.
The club is at the heart of the community and brings runners together of all abilities, gender, beliefs and religion in a non-judgemental environment. The club supports local businesses where possible, including a local florist, embroidery services and a web engineer. Holding sessions in the local Village Hall has helped to build social cohesion.
“We have become more than a club, we are a family,” explains Founder, Sam Miller.
Impact
Hawkinge Hurricanes achieved Clubmark status within a year of forming and have received a series of local awards, including the Pitmann Training Community Award for the South East in 2018.
“I joined a year ago, I have met the best group of varied runners. Progressed from 5k to a marathon in April 2017. Great coach and team members, always there to keep you motivated. No room for egos, but plenty for friends.” - Club Member.
