Public Health England (PHE) has launched a consultation on Everybody Active, Every Day – its national physical activity implementation framework.
Physical inactivity is the fourth major risk factor for chronic diseases or preventable cause of death in England and the new Framework aims to provide a single, coherent national approach to getting the nation active and healthy.
It also hopes to support local leaders to work in partnership and provide evidence of what works to get everyone active.
Emma Boggis, Chief Executive of the Sport and Recreation Alliance, believes that sport and recreation can make a unique contribution to tackling the inactivity epidemic.
“The Framework acknowledges this inactivity epidemic as a shared problem that must be tackled in the round. But we’d still like to see a far greater understanding at both national and local level of what sport and recreation has to offer.
“Tackling inactivity is all about keeping the population active and healthy throughout their lifetimes, and sport and recreation is uniquely placed to do just that through the huge range of activities available to people.
“We look forward to working with PHE to build the evidence base and improve evaluation systems for the sport and recreation sector so that the vital contribution the sector makes is better understood and invested in.
“The framework would be strengthened by clear recommendations rather than options and stronger guidance on who is accountable for impact and how this will be measured.
“There is a really big saving for us as a nation in getting the population active – the framework is the beginning of the step change that’s required to make physical activity part of everyday life.”
The Sport and Recreation Alliance will be working with its members to submit a response by 22 September.
