Richard Norris, Open Data Institute
We want to get more people active in England, by making data about physical activity opportunities more openly available, enabling customers to make easier and more informed choices.
The goal of OpenActive is to make data on what, where and when physical activity sessions happen, openly available. This “opportunity data” includes details of a yoga class (“how much will it cost?”) through to badminton court availability (“where and when is a court available?”). It does not include membership or customer data. Making this data open means that developers and innovators can build it into their tools or products.
This all means that more people will be able to find the physical activity opportunities you organise if you publish the data about them to the web. And if more people view the opportunities, we increase the chance of someone participating.
Dr Geoff Nichols, University of Sheffield
Geoff’s presentation will draw on findings from the current EU funded study of social inclusion and volunteering in sports clubs, which is the largest comparative study of sports clubs in Europe. Geoff will provide a brief overview of this multi-dimensional research project, which aims to better understand the role of sports clubs in promoting social inclusion in order to produce best practice guidance for practitioners and academics. The presentation will focus on policy measures and good practice by clubs regarding social inclusion.
Geoff has worked at the University of Sheffield since 1990, where his main research has been on volunteers in sport. He has worked on three national surveys of sports clubs during this time, and led the 2015/16 review of the motivations of sports volunteers for Sport England. He has been the representative for England on the Social Inclusion and Volunteering in Sports Clubs in Europe (SIVSCE) project since 2015.
