Launched in autumn 2021, the programme aims to help participants build managerial competence and confidence so that they can go on to fulfil their potential and aspirations to become future senior leaders within the sport and recreation sector.

The 19 individuals enrolled on the course undertook a wide range of modules on all elements of management and leadership, from developing personal goals and strengths to enhancing team collaboration.

The sessions were hosted by Amanda Bennett who is a leading expert in good governance, effective leadership and inclusion. Amanda was joined by cross-sector leaders including UK Sport CEO Sally Munday, Paralympian Helene Raynsford and former national TV presenter, Keith Daniell.

British Judo’s Karen Roberts, who completed the course, said: “The course has been a fantastic opportunity post the pandemic to come together with lots of different people across the sector and network and understand each other’s environments.

“It’s been fantastic to get a different context on how people are working at the moment and ultimately, the course itself has really enabled us to understand the skills around management and leadership, particularly managing our people, understanding our people, getting the best out of our people, and all the tools that are required to do that.

“One thing I’d say is that if anybody is looking for an opportunity to develop their skills within management and leadership, this is definitely a course I’d recommend for them.”

Lisa Wainwright MBE, CEO of the Sport and Recreation Alliance, added: “I’d like to offer my huge congratulations to all the individuals who have completed the programme and really look forward to seeing how this experience helps them to progress in the future.

“The success of the programme very much relied on the commitment and dedication of each participant, as well as their sponsoring organisation and it’s been wonderful to see how much they’ve all challenged themselves to achieve their own goals.

“Our sector can only benefit from developing its people, being a people first industry and we look forward to planning another exciting programme for our second cohort later in the year.”

Following a hugely successful first run, we are delighted to announce that the programme will return in 2022 and you can now register your interest. If you are keen to find out more, please email events@sportandrecreation.org.uk.
