The European Commission has announced plans for the launch of a European Week of Sport in 2015.
Scheduled for September 2015, the week will promote physical activity and participation in sport at all levels. Funding for the European Week of Sport is expected to come from the Erasmus+ funding stream launched last year.
The European Commission will coordinate events and activities throughout Europe during the week with the help of individual national sports coordinators in each member country. The Commission will also encourage national physical activity awareness-raising activities throughout the week.
The latest Eurobarometer survey on sport and physical activity showed that almost 60% of European Union citizens never or seldom exercise or play sport and Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner responsible for sport, believes the European Week of Sport will be a great way to encourage awareness of the benefits of physical activity across Europe.
“Our aim is for a great Europe-wide experience which will help people change their lifestyles, while having fun at the same time.”
