The English Chess Federation has signed up to the Voluntary Code of Good Governance for the Sport and Recreation Sector.
The Voluntary Code is a sport-specific framework for good governance practice drawn up by the Sport and Recreation Alliance in partnership with national governing bodies, UK Sport and Sport England.
Its seven key principles enable sport and recreation organisations to aspire to and maintain good governance by providing practical advice on improving structures and decision-making processes in their sport or activity.
Since its launch in 2011 more than 80 national governing bodies have signed up.
Emma Boggis, Chief Executive of the Sport and Recreation Alliance, said: “I’m pleased to see the English Chess Federation become the 82nd Alliance member to sign up to the Voluntary Code.
“By having bodies from across the sector adhering to its principles, sport and recreation can only become stronger. Put simply, organisations with good governance make better decisions and are more effective as a result. Signing up to the Voluntary Code is an important step in an organisation’s journey to a more secure future.”
As part of signing up to the Voluntary Code the English Chess Federation is setting up an independent working party, chaired by Gareth Pearce the former Chair of Smith & Williamson, to review its Articles of Association and other aspects of its governance. The Sport and Recreation Alliance will be helping to recruit working party members.

The Sport and Recreation Alliance is delighted to announce that the organisation will be hosting a special event at St James’s Palace on 12 November 2025 to mark its 90th anniversary.
