The APPG for Sport, for which the Sport and Recreation Alliance have supported the secretariat since its creation in 2015, exists to be the central, constructive, cross-party voice for sport in Parliament, promoting the wider societal benefits of sport and physical activity in the UK within the Houses.
We are excited to announce that Kim Leadbeater MP, member for Batley and Spen, was elected as the APPG’s new Chair. A hugely vocal Member of Parliament on the matter of sport and physical activity, Kim brings with her both a passion for the work our clubs and organisations do, and a breadth of experience having worked within the sector for 30 years prior to joining the House of Commons.
Kim stated on Twitter: “Very proud to take up the position of Chair of the APPG for Sport in Parliament. I look forward to working with this fantastic sector and using my background in Sport, Physical Activity, Health and Wellbeing to do all I can to champion our causes together”.
With the huge experience and passion heralded by its eight current members, this group is a strong force of representation for our sector within Parliament. Vice-chairs include: Christina Rees MP, Baroness Grey-Thompson, Baroness Sater, Lord Addington, Ben Bradley MP, Lord Campbell of Pittenweem and Lord Moynihan.
Lisa Wainwright MBE, Alliance CEO said: “It is a great pleasure to see Kim Leadbeater MP elected as Chair of the APPG for Sport. Kim joins a very strong team of Parliamentarians who we are confident will champion the sector and its priorities as best they can.
“The APPG for Sport is a big voice for individuals, clubs and organisations across our communities and nation in a place where they need to be heard. We look forward to supporting the work of the APPG and can’t wait to see the brilliant programme of events in Parliament to come.
We look forward to supporting the new chair and re-elected vice chairs on the work going forward.”
The work of the APPG for Sport and its members will continue to be covered by the Sport and Recreation Alliance across our platforms – providing members with the latest information on the important issue that effect our sector.
