From Monday 29 March, outdoor activity will be permitted to resume with school sport allowed to return when schools re-open on Monday 8 March.

Responding to the roadmap, Lisa Wainwright, Alliance CEO said: “This news marks the start of the recovery for the nation and for our sector. We are delighted to see the return of physical activity has been given the level of importance and priority which it deserves.

“With the imminent re-opening of schools, it is now imperative that school sport, and making sure that children can access activity in after school clubs, is given the same value as academic catch-up.

“We know that activity levels in young people have dropped during the pandemic, and school sport is a crucial avenue in keeping our children healthy and connected.

“However, every community has been impacted by lockdown and the physical and mental wellbeing benefits of being active can now help us all to build back better.

“The announcement that outdoor activity can return next month, with the opportunity to resume team sports will be welcomed by everyone.

“Our sector is safe and prepared to return. Our members have worked tirelessly to make sure that all activity, whether indoor or outdoor, can be delivered securely and within any guidance.

“While we look forwards to the return of activity, we have to be aware that the gradual end of lockdown will not solve all of the problems that this pandemic has created for us.

“We are currently working with the sector to understand the impact that COVID-19 has had on grassroots activity and community clubs.

“This research will be released in the coming weeks and will highlight the support required for our beloved clubs, groups and grassroots institutions to remain open and be ready to welcome back millions of participants.

“We look forward to working with government and our members to put ourselves in the strongest position to help the nation recover in the coming months.”
