Lisa Wainwright, Sport and Recreation Alliance CEO, said: “We look forward to meeting with the Secretary of State and discussing his vision for the department moving forward and how the Alliance, and the wider sector, can help him to achieve our shared goal of creating a more active nation.

“Having already established a positive relationship with the Sports Minister, it was encouraging to see a level of consistency retained to progress the work we have already started together.

“Our first priority will be next month’s Budget and we hope to see measures in place to help community clubs continue the fine work they do to encourage physical activity. Our members are already delivering this change and we encourage the new Secretary of State to work with them.

“There is also the opportunity to protect funding for school sport and we urge that the Soft Drinks Industry Levy is extended to allow this to happen.

“Longer-term, we want to see this support of our sector reflected in the Spending Review which is due to be announced later this year.

“Sport and recreation provides huge social, economic and health benefits. Over the coming months we will be showing the true value of the sector and calling on our members to highlight this as we make the case for increased funding from a variety of government departments.”
