Alliance welcomes new Conservative government

We look forward to working closely with, and challenging, the new government in 2020 as we strive to put an active nation at the heart of policy-making.

Lisa Wainwright, Alliance CEO, welcomed the appointment of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister. She said: “Mr Johnson has previously committed to tackling the huge challenge of childhood inactivity and we look forward to working with him to deliver on this promise.

“We firmly believe that sport and physical activity can be the answer to many societal challenges and our manifesto, which was released ahead of the election, provides a starting point for discussion with several government departments on the policy changes we feel are needed.

“We look forward to the appointment of the new Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and we hope to see an individual with a true understanding of the sector in this key post.

“There was a worrying lack of sport and recreation covered in the Conservative manifesto and this will be a priority for us to address as we start to work with the new government.

“The Alliance looks forward to working closely with our members and officials in DCMS as we always have done to promote the interests of our members.

“This will also be true of other government departments and we look forward to commencing conversations with a broad range of ministers in the coming weeks to discuss how physical activity can positively influence the work they look to do.”

With a Conservative majority, the next challenge for the sport and recreation sector will be handling Brexit, in whatever form it takes.

This will be the priority for the incoming government and our members should get themselves as prepared as possible by taking a look at the dedicated Brexit Guidance section of our website.
