Lisa Wainwright, CEO at the Alliance said: “It is pleasing to see the government’s recognition of the importance of sport and physical activity for children and young people. While details of the announcement will follow in due course, we know that this money will help children who require access to activity in situations where school is the only place they can do this.

“However, we now ask the government to look at the long-term funding picture in schools and make a commitment to sustained investment in PE and school sport in the upcoming Spending Review, as part of an ambitious national strategy to get every child active for 60 minutes every day.

“Further, the Alliance also welcomes the announcement of additional funding to regenerate local tennis courts. The government is rightly focusing on the value that local sport and leisure facilities bring to communities and we hope that this announcement will be the pre-cursor to further commitments in the Spending Review aimed at improving and regenerating vital local leisure facilities.

“We urge the government to invest £1 billion in the improvement of these crucial facilities in the upcoming Spending Review so that people from all backgrounds and communities can access the benefits of an active lifestyle as we build back better as a nation.”
