The Sport and Recreation Alliance is holding the first ever Sport and Law conference on 4 December at De Montfort University in Leicester.

Delivered in partnership with the Legal Panel Framework, the conference will offer practical grounding to help sport and recreation organisations deal better with legal and compliance issues.

The Legal Panel Framework is a group of ten recommended law firms who were hand-picked by the Sport and Recreation Alliance, Sport England, UK Sport and Sport Wales to provide legal services to national governing bodies.

Delegates will be able to choose from ten workshops at the event, each one delivered by a different legal panel firm.

A forum will also take place where sports organisations can discuss various legal issues they have faced and exchange ideas and best practice on how they can be overcome.

Workshop topics will include:

  • immigration and sports visas
  • discipline and selection policies
  • property planning
  • safeguarding, legislation and CRBs
  • volunteers
  • social media and websites
  • governance
  • charity and CASCs.

Joy Tottman, governance and compliance officer at the Sport and Recreation Alliance said:

“This event is a must for chairs, chief executives, legal directors and anybody else concerned with legal matters in sport because it is the only conference that will provide tailored practical legal help to sport and recreation organisations rather than focus on the usual general academic debates.”

Karen Moorhouse, head of legal at Rugby Football League said:

“With so many sports law conferences out there it is great to finally have one that is designed specifically to help and support national governing bodies with our legal needs. It feels like it is our conference and our chance to engage lawyers with what we really want and need from them.”

Mary Tetley, chief executive of the British Sub-Aqua Club said:

“I’m looking forward to the conference as it presents a real opportunity for us chief executives to challenge the legal panel firms about what we need from them. It’s also a welcome and much-needed way of engaging with the law to ensure the success of our organisations going forward.”

The price of the conference is £40 +VAT for members and £60 +VAT for non-members.
