The Sport and Recreation Alliance and the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) are launching a brand new qualification to boost the standards of governance within the sport and recreation sector.

The ICSA Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Sport Governance and Administration, which will launch in January 2016, has been designed for employees or senior volunteers in sports’ organisations with responsibility for implementing or overseeing governance arrangements with their governing boards.

The qualification is at Level 6 (final year undergraduate level) and the syllabus comprises three modules covering key aspects of sport governance and administration:

Module 1: Introducing Sport Governance
Module 2: Implementing Governance in Sport
Module 3: Developing and Maintaining Governance Systems in Sports Organisations

This course is delivered over five months via a series of webinars that will cover the content of the syllabus. Ahead of the syllabus launch in January there is a preliminary event in November where attendees can find out more about the Certificate.

Emma Boggis, Sport and Recreation Alliance CEO: “Building on our work on the Voluntary Code of Good Governance, it is important that we continue to improve the standards of governance within the sport and recreation sector. We believe this qualification reflects the sector and is tailor made for individuals who want to learn how to implement and improve their sports governance arrangements within their governing boards. We at the Alliance are delighted to be able to collaborate with ICSA in this way and will draw on their expertise in the delivery of the qualification to ensure that it is the new gold standard for governance.”

Lord Moynihan: “Only by demonstrating good governance in sport can government and British sports administrators use their influence internationally. There is an obvious need to have increased accountability and transparency of governing bodies of sport and I believe that this new qualification is a positive step for the sport and recreation sector.”

Simon Osborne, chief executive of ICSA: “There is an increasing need for people working within sport to be fully aware of their governance responsibilities. This qualification will facilitate the work of governance officers and board secretaries and we look forward to working with the Sport and Recreation Alliance to improve governance in the sporting sector.”
