The three finalists, who are all ambassadors for mental health and promote good mental health policies, are: Boxing Futures, Core Sport and Hallam Barbell Olympic Weight Lifting and Strength Training Club. The Mental Health Award celebrates clubs or programmes which use the power of sport and recreation to promote wellbeing.
Active IQ is the UK’s leading awarding organisation for the active leisure, learning and wellbeing sector with over 500 approved centres across the UK and internationally.
Jenny Patrickson, Managing Director for Active IQ said:
“Mental health is very much in the spotlight at the moment and rightly so, as it affects people of all ages. Individuals and organisations are increasingly faced with friends, colleagues, peers and customers suffering with mental health issues.
“Those within a community sport setting can play an important role when it comes to spotting the signs and offering support to those struggling with a mental health problem.
“Sport and exercise can be a powerful tool to help those through a difficult time and we would like to wish all three finalists the very best of luck. All are worthy winners, doing valuable work to promote good mental health policies and practices.”
In 2018, Active IQ launched a level 2 award in mental health awareness. The qualification provides learners with an understanding and awareness of common mental health disorders and issues, helps reduce stigma and discrimination and encourages people to talk about mental health. It also helps learners spot the signs of mental health issues in themselves as well as others and gives them the skills to provide mental health first aid.
