A guide to our Governance and Workforce month

A guide to our Governance and Workforce month news article image

We are launching a governance and workforce throughout October to provide you with practical and idea-generating information that will help you prepare for the new launch of the UK Sports Governance Code. This Code will be mandatory for all sports bodies seeking public funding in the next funding period.

Government has set the agenda and even through we don’t yet know the full detail of the new Code -  we want to help try and get the sector ready.

This month will help give you the chance to think about what practices you already have in place, how can these be improved and if required, what needs to be addressed. We anticipate the launch of the Code at the end of October, so this month about giving the sector:

  1. The opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities around embedding good governance in your organisation;
  2. Advice on what you can learn from other sectors about good governance.

We know that if an organisation is well governed and has a diverse and representative workforce, it is more likely to be high-performing and as a result,  hopefully achieving its overall objectives. This was one of the points we highlighted in our Fit for the Future report where we also made reference to how the sector needs to make sure that its workforce is inclusive and that it has the skills needed to “reflect the changes in focus and demand”.

When the Government launched Sporting Future, we were pleased to see that this theory was endorsed with the creation of the of a new ‘gold standard’ UK Sports Governance Code. The strategy also announced the development of a new workforce strategy to help professionalise the sector and create a clear skills framework that will help to improve diversity, particularly within senior leadership positions.

Our Governance team is here to help you with questions or ideas you may have about the topics raised during Governance and Workforce month and more generally about the UK Sports Governance Code when it launches at the end of October. We hope this month will give you some time to think about your own governance so you are better placed to tackle any changes you may have to make.

Be on the lookout for our series of blogs from experts on governance and workforce featuring on both our website and weekly newsletter, as well watching out for information @sportrectweets. Once the Code is launched we will quickly produce a member briefing that will break it down so you are able to easily catch what it means for you.
