On Saturday 27 August, people across the nation will kick off the bank holiday weekend with I Am Team GB by getting out and getting active – shoulder to shoulder with athletes from Team GB.
Created with support from the National Lottery, The British Olympic Association and ITV, I Am Team GB is an open event where everyone can take part in the nation’s biggest ever sports day.
Sports clubs across the UK will be hosting free events to tap in to the Olympic inspiration felt by the nation following Team GB’s most successful away Games in over 100 years.
Members of the Sport and Recreation Alliance and their clubs have been working hard to make sure there is a great variety of fun and accessible activities for everyone to enjoy. Members of Team GB will also be lending a hand at events to help inspire the nation to get in to sport and to remain physically active.
Speaking about I Am Team GB, Emma Boggis, Chief Executive of the Sport and Recreation Alliance said, “The achievement and success of Team GB in Rio has really captivated the nation. I Am Team GB events, coupled with ITV’s hour-long switch off, is a great opportunity for people to tap in to this inspiration, discover their local sports clubs and be introduced to new physical activities.”
“It is now important that the sport and recreation sector continues their hard work of getting people active and participating in sport. Initiatives like this, which brings together elite athletes and local sports communities, are a great opportunity to keep this inspirational momentum going. It is also reinforces the fact that without grassroots sport and the volunteers and coaches who make it possible, aspiring athletes simply wouldn’t achieve their ultimate success.”
As part of the Sport and Recreation Alliance’s 90th anniversary celebrations, nine young people have been recognised as future sector leaders in a special Youth Edition of the organisation’s annual Community Sport and Recreation Awards.
