We want to ensure the UK is the most active nation in Europe

The UK currently ranks joint-11th out of 15 comparable European nations for activity - we're urging Government and policy-makers to #TaketheLead and make the UK the most active nation in Europe.

The latest evidence from the Sport and Recreation Alliance shows that the UK ranks joint 11th out of 15 comparable European nations for levels of physical activity. The UK is also ranked as the third highest spender on healthcare costs caused by inactivity and only 9th in overall wellbeing.

The Alliance's Head of Research and Development, Richard Boardman, outlines the research behind the campaign here:

Before the General Election in 2024, a coalition of more than 200 bodies, athletes, businesses and charities across health, sport, recreation, and physical activity wrote an open letter to party leaders calling on them to #TakeTheLead and commit to making the UK the most active nation in Europe.

The call for change is driven by the Active Partnerships network, the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity, the Sport and Recreation Alliance, the Sport for Development Coalition, ukactive and the Youth Sport Trust, which together represent thousands of organisations, gyms, swimming pools, leisure centres, sports governing bodies, and professionals across the UK.

The letter kickstarted the #TaketheLead campaign, which will showcase the importance of creating a more active nation and, crucially, highlight the need for leadership by our national politicians to create the conditions for change.
