UK Sport consultation on elite sport funding opens

UK Sport consultation on elite sport funding opens news article image

UK Sport has opened the public consultation into its funding strategy of elite performance sports. The Alliance needs your views to inform its submission.

The consultation closes on 10 December with a view to seeing initial feedback from UK Sport in February.

The aim of the consultation is to enable UK Sport to listen to all the people affected by the work that they do and to develop a strategy which builds on the success of UK Sport over the last decade.

Ahead of every new investment cycle (every four years), UK Sport reviews its funding principles and strategies to ensure they are fully aligned with targets agreed in consultation with Government. However, this review will be of particular interest given the recent hot debate over the funding of some sports, in particular team sports.

Since 1997, UK Sport's 'No Compromise' approach has helped Great Britain move from 36th in the Olympic medal table (Atlanta Games, 1996) to third in both the Olympic and Paralympic tables at London 2012. Team GB amassed a record-breaking 185 medals across 30 Olympic and Paralympic sports and in turn creating 213 Olympic and Paralympic medal-winning athletes.

The strategy has also served the nation well at Winter Games. In the Sochi Winter Games earlier this year, Great Britain equalled its best ever performance in the Olympics and delivered its best in 30 years in the Paralympics, creating 21 medal winners.

Much of this success has been attributed to UK Sport’s targeted approach to investment, ensuring that resources are channelled towards the athletes who have the greatest chance of winning medals.

In the Rio cycle, for example, UK Sport is investing around £380m into 45 Olympic and Paralympic sports – both summer and winter.

However, UK Sport has indicated its willingness to consider other approaches for the next cycle of funding, which has led to the launch of this consultation with all of its partners.

The Alliance has been invited to a formal consultation session to give the views of the wider sector. Please submit your thoughts, observations and comments to James Allen by email by 20 November.

We also encourage all those wishing to participate to download the form and fill in their own answers to the consultation questions.

Once completed you should email your completed forms to public.consultation@uksport.gov.uk.
