New Government plan to get more people cycling

New Government plan to get more people cycling news article image

The Government has outlined draft plans to double cycling by 2025 and to explore how further funding can be generated for cycle schemes across England.

The Government’s vision is that cycling, alongside walking, will become the natural choice for shorter journeys, regardless of age, gender, fitness or socioeconomics - beginning with encouraging children to walk or cycle to school where possible.

Funding for walking and cycling in England has steadily increased in recent years. For cycling, it is currently around £5 per person each year. The Government’s aspiration is that – working with local government, and businesses – it can achieve a minimum funding equivalent to £10 per person each year by 2020 and 2021 – and sooner if possible.

The delivery plan includes a number of actions to meet these targets including:

  • plans for infrastructure developments
  • cycle-proofing roads and wider transport infrastructure
  • facilitating behaviour change across the country by promoting cycling and walking as alternative sustainable travel modes.

The draft delivery plan has been published for informal consultation and you can submit your views by emailing Walking.Cycling@dft.gsi.gov.uk.

The consultation closes 13 November 2014.
