London Sport launches new strategy for an active London

London Sport, the not-for profit sport and physical activity organisation for the Capital, today launched its bold new strategy for an active London in partnership with the Mayor of London and Sport England.

The new vision unveiled by the organisation is to make London the most physically active sporting city in the world, with one million Londoners active by 2020.

There are over eight million people living in London, but only one in every two people are not physically active, rising to three in every four for those with a disability. Getting people to do more physical activity has many benefits for London including: improving health and well-being, to help grow the economy and create happier communities.

Sport generates up to £2.6 billion to the London economy, and so London Sport consists of a complex network, all of which have an influence in making London more active, including schools, governing bodies of sport, leisure centres, coaches, clubs and many more organisations.

London Sport has set out five objectives:
1. Make it easier for Londoners to find the right activity, stay in it, and achieve their potential;
2. Get more resources by making the best use of current investment and securing more;
3. Support grassroots organisations by making the structures simpler and better;
4. Create a bigger and better workforce to support activity;
5. Harness the power of elite sport to create sustained grassroots activity and inspire the next generation of talent.

London Sport will also deliver services to support 46 National Governing Bodies of Sport to deliver their sport in the community. They will provide support to enable National Governing Bodies to access local groups such as local authorities, clubs, education partners, health agencies and others committed to increasing participation in sport across London.
