Rishi Sunak announced that individuals with average profits of £50,000 or less will be eligible for taxable grants worth 80% of their average profits over the last three years, up to £2,500 per month.

This money will be backdated to March and will be based on average profits over the last three years. If they are able to, self-employed workers will also be able to continue their work whilst claiming this grant.

The money will be available from June and will be a lump sum for the three months from March and will be a taxable benefit to be filed in tax returns by January 2022.

Lisa Wainwright, CEO at the Alliance, said: “This has been a troubling issue for a large number of our members, and we have lobbied government to make sure that steps like those taken today were rapidly introduced.

“The Chancellor’s announcement will provide long-awaited relief and support for those organisations who rely on self-employed teachers, coaches and support staff to deliver their sport and physical activity.

“Nearly 100,000 individuals in the sport and recreation sector will benefit from these measures which will help to sustain the sector and make sure that it survives.

“Creating an active nation has never been more important and as a society we must continue to use physical activity as a way to connect with our communities and stay healthy, even if that means embracing the new virtual way of doing so.

“This relief is just one way of protecting our sector and at the Alliance we will continue to work innovatively on our members behalf to support them through these uncertain times.”
