George, sadly passed away earlier this month and a week later, he was followed by his wife Jill.
George attended the Division of Outdoor Pursuits as a representative of the Camping and Caravanning Club and in 1979 he was elected Chairman of the Division. In the same year, George was also appointed a Member of the GB Sports Council and served until 1988.
George was a member of the Alliance Executive Committee from 1975-1997, where he was elected Deputy Chairman 1984 - 1987. In 1984, George was appointed an Honorary Member of the Alliance and later, in 1997 he was made one of our Vice Presidents. Through this role, George provided ambassadorial support, his wisdom and experience to the new Board and attended meetings of the newly convened General Council.
When the British Sports Trust was part of the CCPR/Sport and Recreation Alliance, he was the Chairman of the Trust Management Committee and also served as the Chairman of their Vice Presidents Committee.
George was passionate about both organisations and played a key role for many years, on what was often a challenging period. He was involved in contractual discussions between the CCPR and the Sports Council and the development of funding for sports leaderships schemes organised and promoted by the British Sports Trust, now known as Sports Leaders UK.
Sadly, in later years George was unable to attend Vice Presidents’ meetings and his presence at these were missed by his peers and colleagues. George’s knowledge and advice were always welcome and he will be missed by those that remember him with great affection.
