England Netball (EN) is the national governing body for one of England's biggest female team sports, netball. It oversees and is responsible for the strategic plan of the sport across the country. EN is a not-for-profit, customer focused sport business aiming to lead a movement on and beyond the court. Netball has experienced a decade of extraordinary growth with the Vitality Roses 2018 Commonwealth Games Gold medal, alongside the history making Netball World Cup 2023 Silver Medal, both leaving a thriving legacy of increased following and participation in the sport. Following the successes on the international stage, fans flocked to sold out arenas registering record-breaking attendances, and a diverse portfolio of participation programmes (including Bee Netball, Back to Netball, Walking Netball and Club Netball) scaled up significantly to support 3.1m participants to enjoy the sport annually.
Having launched a new 10-Year Adventure Strategy?for the sport in 2021, EN is looking to build on the solid foundations above and drive forward plans for an exciting next chapter by growing and developing at all levels of the game, accelerating professionalisation aspirations and taking the sport to new audiences.
About The Role
The Netball Development Officer (NDO) is responsible for growing netball activity in the county, maintaining a shared, insight-driven plan aligning with our Adventure Strategy and purpose. The NDO will empower and support our clubs, leagues, partners, volunteers, and workforce to join us in delivering outstanding participation opportunities for members and participants, whilst seeking income generation and funding opportunities. This role will support EN's Adventure Strategy and will contribute to how we grow participation in netball across all life stages making it a game for life, providing extraordinary experiences, and building a thriving collective within the sport.
Key Responsibilities
Members, Clubs and Leagues
- Be an expert and champion of our membership and support packages available to individuals, clubs and leagues.
- Understand the local club and league landscape within the county including their current position, ambitions and challenges.
- Empower and support local leagues and clubs to deliver outstanding relevant activity recognising the needs of the audience.
- Activate national initiatives, campaigns and approaches that support evolution of both club and league landscapes across the county area.
Customer experience
- Maintain engaging, accessible local communication channels that enable local landing of our 'resonant voice'?campaigns alongside sharing local news i.e. social media, website and media outlets
- Understand the county demographics and find ways to attract new audiences with a focus on those from underserved communities.
- Provide exceptional experiences to all participants, clubs, league and volunteers as well as support those from third parties who deliver netball experiences as part of the partnership agreements.
Participation and Programmes
- Maintain expert knowledge and insight on the county; the landscape, population, facilities, workforce, netball provision and partners.
- Utilise knowledge, insight and mapping (in partnership with the Netball Development Community Coach where one in place), to annually plan a menu of inclusive activity, for every community that suits the needs of the local area, aligning to current national priorities, the adventure strategy, our purpose and key performance indicators.
- Ensure local plans reflect 'game for life' ambitions aiming to deliver for every age and stage ensuring we are championing the importance of female health through NETBALLHer.
- Proactively embed any new programmes or approaches into the local netball landscape in a considered manner.
- Organise, promote, deliver and monitor England Netball programmes ensuring a sustainable financial model and a great participant experience supporting all stages of the participant journey.
- Coach and deliver agreed sessions, camps and events including festivals.
- Support the implementation of children and young people programmes in school, club and community settings.
Partnerships
- Champion and continually demonstrate our purpose driven culture and embedded behaviours, supporting partners to share these.
- Be the County Netball Association (CNA) Relationship Lead, working with them to collaborate on shared goals, a shared purpose and plan that aligns to England Netball Adventure Strategy.
- Attend County Netball Association meetings and provide regular activity reports.
- Establish and nurture local partnerships that align with our purpose and enable outstanding programme experiences and reach (including but not limited to the Active Partnership, Local Authorities, relevant local charities, facility providers, school networks).
- Relationship manage local delivery partnerships via Partnership Agreements, ensuring quality delivery is provided across all deliverers of programmes.
Operations
- Be responsible for meeting and monitoring local Key Performance Indicators; updating trackers and systems to demonstrate progress as required.
- Maintain expert knowledge of all technical systems to provide insight, deliver and monitor programmes and delivery.
- Generate programme income and manage small budgets following NDO financial guides to support sustainability.
- Recruit, manage and support in accordance with our casual coach guidance any coaches required to deliver the annual plan.
- Work with priority facility development projects to identify potential netball usage, access funding and ensure developments meet the needs of the local area.
- Access local funding support and signpost potential clubs, coaches, officials and volunteers to relevant schemes.
About you
- Passionate about sport and are an ambassador for sports participation.
- Committed to making a difference – and want to play a part in opening up netball to new and underserved communities.
- People Orientated – with the ability to enthuse, inspire and empower individuals to return and or grow their involvement in the game.
- Understanding - able to acknowledge and support to overcome potential barriers to participation, whilst realising potential motives, aspirations and needs of women relating to netball participation.
- Experienced working with volunteers/voluntary groups – ability to build positive working relationships underpinned by Working as One, supporting volunteers to embed collaborative behaviours and ways of working.
- Knowledgeable about the geographical area (population and netball landscape) and England Netball participation products and programmes (desirable) and understand the best ways to reach our current and new audiences through local channels.
- Coaches and leaders – have experience of, be confident and engaging either coaching, leading or facilitating young people and adults. Be able to adapt your style to the needs of the participants. In addition, either hold a level 2 netball coaching qualification or be keen and willing to gain appropriate coaching qualifications and or coaching experiences provided by England Netball.
- Awareness of factors impacting participation linked to wellbeing and women/girls health i.e. NETBALLHer as well as health and safety and assessing risks in a sport environment.
- A strong communicator - who can tailor your written and verbal communication appropriately to the target audience. It is a requirement to have a minimum standard of English and Maths at GCSE Grade C /4 or equivalent.

Location
This role covers the Avon county area with regular travel to the county, travel expenses payable. Office attendance required at the county office once a week (travel to office expenses not covered).
