The league has a colourful history including great teams, dynasties, memorable moments, and unforgettable players and coaches. Following recent developments, the SLB is embarking on an exciting programme of change and growth. We are looking for someone experienced to support the growth of one of the most exciting prospects in British sport.

The Independent Chairperson will provide inclusive leadership to the SLB Board, ensuring that it functions effectively, develops a clear strategic direction, and holds the executive team to account. As a visible and powerful ambassador for SLB, the Chairperson will be responsible for building relationships across a wide spectrum of stakeholders and championing the growth and reputation of professional basketball.

About The Role

Role Purpose

The Independent Chairperson will provide inclusive leadership to the SLB Board, ensuring that it functions effectively, develops a clear strategic direction, and holds the executive team to account. As a visible and powerful ambassador for SLB, the Chairperson will be responsible for building relationships across a wide spectrum of stakeholders and championing the growth and reputation of professional basketball.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Ensure the organisation has a coherent, deliverable strategy that supports the long- term growth of elite, professional basketball in the UK.
  • Maintain oversight of progress against strategic objectives, in partnership with the COO and Board.

Board Effectiveness

  • Set the tone for the Board’s working style and culture; promote open dialogue, diversity of thought, and effective decision-making.
  • Chair Board and General Meetings, ensuring agendas are clear and meetings are well- prepared and productive.
  • Uphold the principles of good governance, transparency, and collective

Executive Support and Challenge

  • Act as a critical friend to the COO, offering both support and constructive
  • Help define and maintain a clear distinction between the roles of governance and executive management.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Represent SLB with credibility and authority in key external
  • Build relationships with the Home Country Associations, DCMS, funding bodies, clubs, sponsors, and other partners.
  • Be a visible figurehead and advocate for SLB’s purpose and values, including equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Governance and Compliance

  • Ensure that the Board collectively fulfils its legal and regulatory
  • Support the recruitment, development, and performance review of Board
  • Ensure effective succession planning and Board

Person Specification

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience chairing a board or senior-level committee in a comparable
  • Deep understanding of good
  • Unquestionable integrity, independence of thought, and personal
  • Strategic thinker with a track record of sound judgement and leadership in complex
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building
  • A commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive

Desirable

  • Knowledge of or strong interest in professional sport governance, structures, and
  • Understanding of sports commercial
  • Experience in high-profile stakeholder environments (e.g. media, government, funding bodies).

Further Information

Terms of Appointment

  • This role is remunerated at a rate of £25K per annum, with reasonable expenses also to be reimbursed.
  • Time commitment required of 3-4 days per month
  • 1 year initial term
  • The Chairperson must be demonstrably independent of any SLB club or related
