We are the National Governing Body for lawn bowls, the form of the sport which is played at the Commonwealth Games. Over 100,000 people play bowls regularly within the 1800 affiliated bowls clubs nationwide.
Our dream is for everybody to realise the joy and benefit of playing sport and we believe the inherent qualities of bowls are well-placed to make that happen. Our mission is to promote and develop the sport of bowls across England so it enriches the lives of its participants, connects communities and is in good health for future generations.
In the vanguard of that mission are members of the Bowls England staff team, overseen by a knowledgeable board of directors and supported by an army of spirited volunteers.

With the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on the horizon, and fantastic progress being made in the delivery of our Fit for the Future strategy, we are now seeking applications for the key role of Chair of Bowls England.
The Chair will provide strategic leadership of the Board, support the Chief Executive in delivering our strategic plan and represent our organisation externally. This is a dynamic and influential role. We are bold in our ambitions and therefore we are seeking someone with exceptional skills and qualities to continue to drive our sport forward.
What we are looking for
Bowls England is seeking an exceptional and experienced individual to lead the organisation in its mission to grow and develop the future of bowls, building on recent successes in modernising our sport and organisation.
The Chair will give good leadership to guide the strategic direction of Bowls England, and its Board, and give focus to shaping the future of its operations including governance, performance and management of the business.
As Chair, the successful candidate will guide and challenge the executive team, ensuring high standards of performance, ethical conduct, and value for money in managing resources.
This person should have previous experience in chairing a business ideally gained in sport, but not essential, and be able to demonstrate a track record of success in relevant businesses.
Location: Flexible, able to work from home with some meetings in person in Royal Leamington Spa and other events that require attendance.
Term: Initial term of 3 years from February 2026, with another 3-year term if reappointed at the end of term one.
Time commitment: Our Chair would be required to –
This would equate to approximately 5 days per month.
