Since Justin Rose’s memorable gold medal triumph four years ago, there have been plenty of recent success stories that could drive Britain onto the podium in 2021. 

Georgia Hall won the Women’s British Open in 2018 and was one of four English women involved in last year’s winning European Solheim Cup team.  

In the last decade alone, three Englishmen have reached the position of world number one, with all of them coming through the England Golf club and amateur system – Lee Westwood, Luke Donald and Justin Rose.  

We got in touch with the national governing body to find out more about Team GB’s ambitions for the Olympic Games and how you can follow in the footsteps of your sporting heroes.  

Who better to get the ball rolling than the man who will be leading the British professionals to Tokyo…

Who is golf ideal for?  

Golf is a fun, family sport for everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or physical ability. In fact, golf is unique in the sense that a child can compete against a parent or grandparent on an equal footing thanks to the system of handicaps. More than that, golf is a healthy outdoor pursuit and is great for mental wellbeing with a fantastic social scene.

What do I need to get started?  

Just bring positivity and enthusiasmBeginners will be made welcome as golf clubs are eager to encourage newcomers and many will provide tuition and have equipment to borrow for those just starting out.

How do I find my local club? 

It’s easy. England Golf represents over 1,800 affiliated clubs and facilities and there are ranges and 9-hole courses as well as 18-hole venues to choose from. Go to the ‘Find and Play’ section on the England Golf website which will help you identify facilities in your local area.
