The Private Members' Bills for the next parliamentary session were announced today and revealed that the Lighter Later campaign – supported by over 90 organisations across a range of sectors, and including the Alliance – was unsuccessful in securing an MP to adopt it.
Working in conjunction with 10:10, the Alliance lobbied all of the 20 MPs that won the ballot to introduce a Private Member' Bill, but the competition was fierce.
There were countless organisations jostling to get their issues to the front of the parliamentary queue and although a plethora of MPs in the ballot did support the motion – an attractive, high-profile issue – no clock change pioneer that we had hoped for was found.
With no policy to focus our efforts on for the rest of this year and it being hugely unlikely any new developments will come up until at least after a Scottish independence referendum and general election – the Alliance and 10:10 have decided to wind the Lighter Later campaign up for now.
However, we have no doubt that the fight for lighter evenings has not been lost, merely postponed.
