Delving into the first year of Sporting Future

The Alliance and its members provided significant input into the development of Sporting Future and, subsequently, Sport England’s new strategy Towards an Active Nation. The first annual report is therefore a useful marker of progress against the Government’s strategic objectives.

Key areas the Alliance and its members have been involved with include:

  • A commitment to position the UK as a world leader in sports governance through the publication and application of the new A Code for Sports Governance. The Alliance informed the development of the new Code and is currently reviewing its own Voluntary Code of Good Governance.

  • Confirmation that corporation tax deductibility will be extended to expenditure on grassroots sport in the Finance Bill 2017. The Alliance worked closely with members and HM Treasury/HMRC to achieve this reform and, pending the outcome of further consultation, it should have a positive impact on investment in grassroots sport.

  • Work to identify and develop options for further efficiencies through shared services. The Alliance has been working closely with a number of governing body members on possible opportunities and will continue to assist in developing plans to move to shared back office functions.

  • Publication of Sport England’s volunteering strategy along with funding of up to £26 million over four years. The Alliance will be looking to work with Sport England through the Join In Partnership to recruit and retain diverse and skilled volunteers.

  • The final report of Baroness Grey-Thompson’s Duty of Care review will be published shortly. The Alliance worked with members to respond to the consultation phase of the Review will be looking to work in partnership to implement the recommendations.
