Responding to the PAC inquiry report and conclusions, Alliance CEO Lisa Wainwright MBE, said: “This report echoes our firmly held belief that Government needs to establish a more compelling vision and joined up approach to embed sport, recreation and physical activity into people’s everyday lives.

“There is a clear opportunity for DCMS, as part of its revised sports strategy, to set out how all parts of Government can work more effectively together and in collaboration with the sector to make sure more people benefit from participation in sport, recreation and physical activity.

“This reflects one of the key asks in our recent Unlocking the potential report which identifies a clear strategic vision for how our sector can play a greater role in achieving cross-government policy priorities.

“In addition, public leisure facilities and other local community spaces play a strategically important role within the sector, offering affordable swimming opportunities as well as being home to thousands of clubs and community groups across a range of activities.

“The inquiry’s recommendation for a review of public leisure facilities and further support to ensure their financial sustainability is therefore timely. As set out in our recent cost of living research, the current crisis poses a clear and present threat to the survival of grassroots community clubs and groups.

“It is therefore essential further targeted support is made available to help community facilities and grassroots organisations through the ongoing challenges they face.”
