The Sport and Recreation Alliance welcomes Government’s commitment to investing in community sport, recreation and physical activity, and its recognition of the social and economic value it provides.
The Government set out late last night that, of the £900m it announced it would be investing into the sector following last week’s Spending Review, £500m would go towards supporting major sporting events and £400m towards creating and upgrading new and existing grassroots sports facilities.
Separate but related, the Government also announced last night its plans to reinvest over £100m of water company fines into cleaning up rivers, lakes and seas.
Responding to the announcements, Alliance CEO Lisa Wainwright MBE said:
“I am pleased to see that the funding announced at last week’s Spending Review shows a commitment to grassroots sports and getting more people active, something that the Alliance pushed for alongside our sector partners in our letter to the Prime Minister earlier in June. Investment in high quality, sustainable and affordable facilities, and taking care of our precious green and blue spaces, is essential not just for the invaluable job of fostering healthier and happier communities, but it’s the smart long-term move too – creating a more productive and prosperous nation. We look forward to continuing to engage with Government alongside our members as more detail emerges around how and when the investment will be delivered.”
The National Sector Partners Group has issued a joint statement following the announcement of the Government’s Comprehensive Spending Review today.
