On Monday 22 February, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to lay out the government’s roadmap to the unlocking of the nation as we continue our recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alliance CEO Lisa Wainwright looks at the hopes, expectations and wishes of the sector ahead of this announcement.

“Next week, the government has the opportunity to inspire hope and reinvigorate the country as we look to a brighter future in our collective revival from COVID.

"As a sector, sport and physical activity has been told that the unlocking of facilities will be among the top priorities in the easing of restrictions.

"It is paramount that on Monday, the Prime Minister delivers on this.

"With the warmer months approaching, we are also hoping to see more people being able to access outdoor activity, utilising the incredible green and blue spaces that play such a wonderful role in encouraging exercise.

"A healthy nation is going to be vital as we come back from the pandemic and we know that physical activity will improve the physical and mental wellbeing of everyone. The issues that lockdown has exacerbated are widely publicised, now we must allow activity to play a central role in the recovery process.

"We have understood the painful necessity of closures and for our sector to play its part. We have worked tirelessly to innovate and provide people with new ways to stay active from home. We have continued to deliver in the darkest of times.

"Our members are ready to re-open. They have been working with government officials every step of the way and will be there to welcome participants back in a safe, secure, and friendly environment.

"We look forward to working with government, our members and friends in the sector to get sport and recreation open as soon as we are able to do so.”
